Danny Lorenz, Former Seattle Thunderbird’s Goalie, to Head Kent Valley Hockey Program

Kent
, Wa
. July 3, 2008 – Kent Valley Hockey Association has hired former Seattle Thunderbird goalie Danny Lorenz as Hockey Director.  Lorenz will report for duty at Kent Valley Ice Centre on Monday July 7th.

Danny Lorenz played five seasons for the Western Hockey League Seattle Thunderbirds from 1985-1986 through the 1989-1990 seasons.  He was drafted by the New York Islanders (fourth New York pick, 58th overall) in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft.  Lorenz, originally from Murrayville, British Columbia, played 225 games for Seattle in the Western Hockey League.  His professional career spanned fourteen seasons, 1990-1991 through 2003-2004, and included over 600 games.  He played 136 games in the American Hockey League (AHL), 46 games in the British Ice Hockey Superleague (BISL), 28 games in the British National League (BNL), 22 games in the German Deutschland Elite League (DEL), 32 games in the Central Hockey League (CHL), 53 games in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), 236 games in the International Hockey League (IHL), 56 games with the Tacoma Sabercats in the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) and 8 games in the National Hockey league (NHL).  Lorenz still holds several Seattle Thunderbird and Western Hockey League Goaltending records:

Danny Lorenz Seattle Thunderbird’s Season Records:
Most Saves, Goaltender: 2,144 during 1988-89 season
Most Games Played, Goaltender: 68 during 1988-89 season

Danny Lorenz Seattle Thunderbird’s & WHL Career Records:
   Most Saves, Goaltender: 6,958 - 1986-89 – 1st All-time in WHL

Most recently, Lorenz served as Head Coach/Director of Player Development for the Queen City Steam Jr. “A” Hockey Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Lorenz resigned to pursue other opportunities.  “Danny did a great job for our team over the past three seasons and we wish him well in the his future endeavors,” commented President/Owner Steve Penman, “and we thank him for his hard work over the past few years.”  Under the direction of Lorenz the Queen City Steam finished in 5th place last season in the 13 team Central States Hockey League.

The move from Cincinnati, Ohio to Kent, Washington brings Danny Lorenz closer to his hometown of Murrayville, B.C. and back to his roots in the Seattle area with the Seattle Thunderbirds.  Lorenz was in-transit to Kent from Cincinnati and not available for comment.

Lorenz played under Seattle Thunderbirds former Coach Barry Melrose and Russ Farwell current Owner/Governor/General Manager.  “Danny was a great competitor as a Thunderbird with a strong work ethic and was always a positive contributor as a teammate.  He is a very solid selection for KVHA and we look forward to working with Danny in his new capacity,” commented Farwell from the Thunderbird’s new office in Kent.

Carlos Sosa, color commentator for Seattle Thunderbird radio broadcasts during Danny Lorenz’s tenure with the T-Birds, served as Lorenz’s agent during his long professional career.  Sosa said; “I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Danny Lorenz.  He was the first of many hockey clients for me.  I’m excited to see Danny come full-circle with his hockey career and return to the Seattle area and Kent, new home of the Seattle Thunderbirds.  Danny will be great with the kids at Kent Valley Hockey Association.”

Lexi Doner, President Kent Valley Hockey Association, said; “We would like to welcome Danny back to the local hockey community.  Given his lengthy professional career and his prior relationship with the Seattle T-Birds, he is uniquely qualified to take the helm at KVHA at this time.  We look forward to Danny joining our team as we prepare for the arrival of the T-Birds in Kent and the continued growth of our program.”

KVHA Announces Tryouts for U-16 & U-18 Teams

Kent
, WA
. May 28, 2008 – Kent Valley Hockey Association (KVHA) has scheduled July 12th & 13th, 2008, for tryouts for their Kent Valley Selects U-16 and U-18 teams.  The tryouts will be held at KVHA’s home ice at the Kent Valley Ice Centre in Kent, Washington.  Kent Valley Ice Centre is located 10 minutes from Sea-Tac Airport.

Registration for the two day tryout is only $40.  KVHA will accept registrations through July 3rd, 2008.  All participants must be pre-registered with USA Hockey for the 2008/2009 season.  USA Hockey registration is available on-line at

The primary purpose of KVHA’s U-16 & U-18 program is to
provide an exciting opportunity for players 17 and under to develop their hockey skills and participate with KVHA in the development of a nationally recognized hockey-skill development program.  A secondary benefit of the program is to provide an elite hockey program that will allow local players to pursue an elite level of hockey skill development and competition without having to leave the area.

KVHA’s inaugural 2007/2008 U-16 “AAA” team had a successful season achieving their primary goal of skill development and exposure for all of their players.  Seven players were invited to Western Hockey League (WHL) tryout camps this summer.  Three players are currently on protected lists of WHL teams.  In addition, Select players received numerous other invitations to BCHL, USHL and other Jr. “A” tryout camps.  At the conclusion of the season, two players were selected to represent the Pacific District at the USA Hockey Select 16 camp and three were listed and ranked by USHL Central Scouting.

The U-16 & U-18 programs will emphasize skill development with 3 to 4 weekly on-ice practices and 3 to 4 dry-land sessions through Kent Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Center.  The team will also bring in credentialed guest instructors to supplement their coaching staff.  Both teams will play an all-tournament schedule which will include key tournaments in B.C. and throughout the United States.

Les Grauer
will serve as Head Coach for the U-16 and U-18 programs.  Grauer has extensive coaching and playing experience and is eminently qualified to lead these teams.  Specifically:

  • 16 year youth level coach (Europe and USA) 80-84, 96-07
