A TALE OF TWO THEFTS:
by an unknown pickpocket in Greece,
and by AAA South Insurance in Florida

In May of 2010, I had my pocket picked on the Metro subway in Athens, Greece; some unknown thief opened a buttoned flap pocket and took my U.S. Passport and some Euros. This professional thief was so smooth that I did not even realize the theft until later. I filed a small claim over this loss upon returning to the U.S.A. -- and was told by my insurer, AAA South Insurance operating out of Tampa, Florida, that there would be no adverse impact on our homeowner’s insurance rates since this was not an at-fault loss.

And that indeed seemed true for a year-and-a-half, through our first homeowner’s policy renewal in February, 2011, until this year I happened to call AAA South Insurance on another matter entirely, and just happened to ask what their policy renewal would cost.
Lo and behold, I was told that it would cost some 50% more than what I had been paying,
and that two-thirds of the increase was due to this minor claim -- which I had been told had no impact on our rates. Protesting this massive and unjustified increase, I spoke with several AAA customer disservice representatives, ending with supervisor Nasty Nanci.
This charmer mostly tried to intimidate me by making up stories on the spot and talking over me when I tried to say anything. Finally, I gave up and asked for her supervisor.

After a few more circles around the AAA South Insurance track (which seems to simulate the endless time loop in the movie Groundhog Day) I was able to get an email reply from
Nanci’s supervisor, Flak Jack (name slightly disguised to protect the guilty.) Note, by the way, that nobody at AAA South Insurance expressed the slightest regret over the massive rate increase; indeed, they seemed to rather enjoy shafting an AAA policyholder/member.
Flak Jack eventually emailed back that, besides my small claim over the theft in Greece,
our house was now one year older than before, so they had the right to raise our rate! Of course, when I signed up for their insurance, shortly after the house was built in 2007, no mention was ever made of their charging more as the house ages. Full disclosure is not a strong point at AAA South Insurance, nor is notifying people of new rates, as they failed to meet the thirty-day notice requirement in the State of Georgia. Shame on AAA – I have been an AAA member since getting my driver’s license in 1953, and their attempted “theft” of our insurance funds by such an unjustified increase, after stating that no such increase would occur, is far worse than getting one’s pocket picked on the Athens Metro!

I recently looked into a policy with AAA and was given a good Quote only to find out that certain charges were not put on the qoute because my daughters car wich was previously mine had to many miles onit. Anyway I had given AAA 680.00 to start the policy and when I fou8nd out about the change in the premium I phoned Chris the agent and told him we decided not to go through with it. I gave him the money on 12/1/11 and told him to refund me on 12/2/11 for a policy that was not even going to come into effect untill12/12/11.It's 12/14/11 and I am still getting the run around about why they have not refunded me. TERRIBLE customer service!

I recently purchased a house in the riverside california area, i have always been a AAA member so i went there to get my loan docs notarized.I have been a notary for 40 years, however i cannot notarize my own papers, so we went to AAA in riverside. The notary was the rudest lady i have ever encountered she took her time to fill out useless papers. She had me and my granddaughter standing for 2 hours while she took a personal phone calls, all we needed was 6 papers notarized. she made it very clear she needed to take her lunch break and even told us we could have came at a better time( keep in mind this took place from 1:30 -3:45). the last papers she refused to sign saying "oh, you know what, i don't feel comfortable signing these". I was blown away and had her call the national notary association, they asked her why she didn't feel comfortable she said she wasn't going to sign it off and that we had taken over her lunch break. I asked to speak to her manager and she said oh she's on lunch come back soon and walked away. i have been a loyal AAA member for countless years, however my renewal is up in April and happy to say i will not be renewing it and neither will my family and small business partners. Its safe to say AAA has lost over 40 members.

I was sad to see all of the bad experiences people have had with AAA. My husband and I have said we think this is one of the best deals out there, ever. I figured I would write because most people only do so when they have had a negative experience

My husband and I are retired, each on a fixed income, because of 100 percent permanent disability. This means neither of us has received a raise for three years now, although the cost of every expense has gone up--some hugely. Our AAA membership fee is $178 per year. AAA floods our mail with insurance offers and other mail about AAA. Why didn't it occur to them to notify the members that handling DMV transactions would now cost $4 each--when AAA had never charged for this service in the past?! Our vehicle warranty includes towing, and our non-AAA car insurance includes towing, so we are unlikely to need AAA towing. We have excellent insurances that cost less than AAA wants to charge. With GPS and with internet service on our computers, we aren't likely to need maps from AAA. WAKE UP, A.A.A.!! Why suddenly spring a $4-per-DMV-transaction fee on us? Do you realize how many have been long-term unemployed? And/or are retired seniors on limited income and unable to increase that? People on fixed incomes plan a year's expenses at a time, to cover all the bases. I, for example, pay half the year's real estate taxes in October, DMV Renewal and other annual expenses in November, installment 2 of the real estate taxes in December, and other periodic expenses the other nine months of the year. It takes careful planning to cover all the bases. Add to that the emergencies that crop up sometimes. Have you any idea how many of your members scraped together their annual vehicle registration fee and couldn't pay your new $4 fee? So you've made them a captive audience--their choices are to eat for three days and get a stiff penalty later for paying DMV late, or pay your $4 fee now and go hungry (in many cases, hungrier) for three days. Surely you can show more consideration than that! You know full well--or, you should--that you stand to lose plenty of members because of your carelessness.

Surprised at You! 10/31/11 6:25PM

I just want to say AAA is awesome. I locked my keys in my car this week... Twice. Both times they came within 15 minutes. The first time was in 5 minutes after I called. I know I live in New Hampshire and we are a small state, but I can't thank AAA enough for what they did for me. Thanks again AAA.

I cannot say enough about the wonderful service I received from AAAHelp today. The telephone contacts were available and ready to help in a very short time.
Within less than an hour (on a Sunday yet) a service person was at my house and cheerfully solved my problem. The service person was Jim Garrett. He was knowledgeable and quickly diagnosed the problem.
He was friendly and very assuring that he could solve the problem. I was back on the road in less than hour.
I guess this is why we have carried AAA for 34 years and will never be without it.
I thank you.

Adding a fee for DMV transactions make the DMV service a benefit of membership no longer.
